Out of money and with little to show for his art school education, John-Calum Macleod takes the ferry home to the Isle of Harris to find that not much has changed except for him. Caught between his deeply religious father and his Glaswegian grandmother, Cal wonders if any lonely men might be found on the barren hillsides of home. A tender and devastating story of love, religion, and the corrosive effects of living a secret life — the third novel from Booker Prize-winning author Douglas Stuart.

Max didn't mean to fall for Vincent — a corporate lawyer whose trad friends and Chinese parents never pictured their son dating a trans woman. After years of bad dates, his care feels like a breath of fresh air. But Vincent is carrying baggage of his own. When the fallout of a decades-old secret resurfaces, Max must decide what forgiveness really means. Funny, sharp and poignant — from the Polari Prize-winning author of Bellies.

3:00 PM – 5:00 PM · The Oxford Hotel, 134 Oxford St Darlinghurst (outside terrace) · Held 6 September

It's 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Living alone in her late mother's country home, Isabel's life is led by routine and discipline — until her brother deposits his new girlfriend Eva as a houseguest for the season. A tale of twisted desire, hidden histories, and the unexpected shape of revenge. Winner of the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction.

Fruit Fly — Josh Silver

September Meeting

Fruit Fly — Josh Silver
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM · The Oxford Hotel, 134 Oxford St Darlinghurst (outside terrace)

A washed-up author will stop at nothing to claw her way back to relevancy — even if it means appropriating a young gay man's tragic story. Dark, funny, and deeply uncomfortable, Fruit Fly is a sharp commentary on who gets to tell queer stories and what it costs when the wrong people do. Josh Silver's adult debut.

October Meeting

To be announced
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM · The Oxford Hotel, 134 Oxford St Darlinghurst (outside terrace)

Book to be announced. Join the mailing list to be the first to know.

We started this group because we wanted somewhere to meet people and read more.

Each month we pick a book — fiction, memoir, poetry — and get together somewhere in Sydney to talk about it.

We use queer as a broad umbrella, covering the full LGBTQIA+ spectrum. Lesbian, trans, bisexual, non-binary, and everything else under it. We're doing our best to be inclusive.

Everyone welcome. No gatekeeping. You don't even have to finish the book.
